"iDIOt" stands for "Integrated Digital I/O Toolkit". It's goal is to present application programs with a standardised API for as many digital I/O cards as possible. The reason for this license instead of GPL is that we think it should be possible to develop a measurement/control system based on Linux and be able to sell it commersially. To force the code to be freely available under GPL would only make the user to switch to M$ based software to protect their investments in their code. This way we bring more users into the Linux bandwaggon, and perhaps they will someday contribute by additions, improvements or just telling other people what a great thing Linux and the Open Software movement is.
